What comes to your mind when you first think of winter? For most people, it would be Christmas. The uplifting carols and glamorous ornaments on the Christmas trees are nothing short of the definition of holiday. Christmas originated from Christianity as to celebrate the birth of Jesus, but is now a worldwide festivity regardless of religion. But how does the celebration differ by countries? Let's find out.
1. 북유럽 Northern Europe
북유럽은 크리스마스의 원조를 놓고 국가 간의 충돌이 있을 만큼 크리스마스에 진심입니다. 라트비아와 에스토니아는 크리스마스 트리의 원조를 놓고 수년간 논쟁을 벌이고, 핀란드, 노르웨이, 스웨덴, 아이슬란드는 산타클로스의 원조를 두고 신경전을 벌입니다. 하지만 크리스마스에 관한 정확한 문헌이 없어 원조를 가리기는 힘들다고 합니다. 북유럽 국가들이 크리스마스에 진심인 만큼 많은 행사들이 있다고 합니다. 가족, 친척들이 함께 모여 저녁 식사를 하는 율레미닥(Julemiddag), 친구, 직장 동료와 함께 아침을 즐기는 율레프로코스트(Julefrokost), 길거리에서 크리스마스 관련 상품들을 파는 율레마르케드(Julemarked) 등 다양한 방법으로 크리스마스를 즐깁니다. 한국의 설날, 추석과 같이 국가의 최대 명절로 가족들이 모여 크리스마스 장식을 만들고 맛있는 음식을 먹는다고 합니다.
Northern European countries don't mess around when it comes to Christmas, and is still fighting tooth and nails over the origin of Christmas. Latvia and Estonia are still debating on the origin of the Christmas tree and Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Iceland over that of Santa Claus. However, due to the lack of historical records, it is nearly impossible to tell who did what first. Each country has various events and customs regarding Christmas such as Julemiddag where families gather for dinner, Julefrokost where friends and co-workers get together for breakfast, and flea-market-like Julemarked where Christmas related gifts are sold. Just like Korea's Seol-Nal, it mostly comes down to family gathering over a meal for Christmas celebration in Northern Europe.
2. 미국 United States
크리스마스는 미국에서도 가장 큰 명절 중 하나입니다. 11월 말에 있는 추수감사절(Thanksgiving Day)을 시작으로 크리스마스, 새해까지 쭉 축제의 분위기를 느낄 수 있습니다. 미국에서는 어딜 가든 화려하고 거대한 크리스마스 장식을 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 각 가정에는 너도나도 크리스마스 트리를 꾸미고 온 집안을 크리스마스 장식으로 꾸민답니다. 또한 사랑하는 사람들과 크리스마스 카드와 선물을 주고 받습니다. 특히, 크리스마스 카드에는 자신의 가족의 사진을 넣는 독특한 문화가 있답니다.
Christmas is one of the biggest holidays in the United States. With Thanksgiving starting off the holiday season, the festivity continues throughout the end of year with Christmas and New Year. During this holiday season, the Christmas trees are literally omnipresent. Not only that, but you will find households decorated with trees and lights as if it were a competition. And exchanging gifts and postcards goes without saying. Note that it's a custom to enclose a family portrait in the postcard.
3. 호주 Australia
호주에서는 전세계에서 가장 특별한 크리스마스를 만날 수 있습니다. 남반구에 위치한 호주의 크리스마스는 여름이기 때문이죠. 한여름의 크리스마스에는 독특한 풍경들을 만나볼 수 있습니다. 많은 사람들이 산타 복장을 하고 해변가로 모여 캐럴을 들으면서 서핑과 선탠을 즐긴다고 합니다. 북유럽, 미국과 마찬가지로 호주에서도 크리스마스는 국가 최대 명절로 온 가족이 모여 크리스마스 장식을 꾸미고 식사를 하며 즐깁니다.
In Australia you can enjoy the most exotic Christmas, due to the country's location in the southern hemisphere. Australia's Christmas is in the summer, and therefore you'll meet surfers and people on the hot summer beach dressed as Santas. Just like Northern European countries and United States, celebration boils down to family gatherings and enjoying quality family time over meals.
4. 한국 Korea
외국에서는 크리스마스가 '들어가는 날' 이라면 한국에서는 '나가는 날' 입니다. 한국에서는 크리스마스에 집에서 가족과 함께 보내기 보다는 밖으로 나가 연인과 데이트를 합니다. 레스토랑에 가서 맛있는 음식을 먹고, 케이크를 사서 축하하고, 선물을 주고받으면서 크리스마스를 보냅니다. 이 때문에 한국의 크리스마스에 연인이 없는 사람들은 다른 날 보다 더욱 외로움을 느낄 수 있습니다. 최근에는 친구들과 모여 크리스마스 파티를 즐기는 사람들도 늘어나고 있답니다. 그만큼 한국에서 크리스마스는 가족보다는 연인, 친구들과 함께 보내는 날입니다.
Where as most western countries' Christmas celebration is family-centric, Korea is quite the opposite. Rather than enjoying Christmas with family, people usually go out with friends or lovers. Fancy dinners, cakes, and gift exchanges are the norm for the Korean way of celebrating Christmas. And for this reason, Christmas may feel more lonesome for those without dates. However, Christmas gathering with friends (without dates) are also becoming a thing in Korea, so you need not worry. As such, Christmas comes down to friends and lovers rather than family for Koreans.
